Title:
Monitoring Data Collected at Dauphin Island Station from 1999 to 2001
Description:
Abstract:
Meteorological and hydrographic data were collected from a monitoring station on Dauphin Island from Nov 1999 to Feb 2001. Variables measured include air temperature, barometric pressure, solar and quantum radiation, wind speed and direction, water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH,specific conductance, and water level.
Purpose:
The value of coastal observing systems is recognized by the U.S. Congress, the National Ocean Partnership Program, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration. Recent reports by the Pew Oceans Commission and U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy have decried the lack of information from near coastal waters on which to base management decisions and recommended monitoring programs linked to strong research. Reasons for observations of meteorological and hydrographic parameters include (1) continuous characterization of spatial and temporal patterns of change in water quality, (2) development of a permanent record of significant and human caused changes in environmental indicators over time and (3) support for research activities through the availability of consistent, scientifically valid data. Data are archived as part of a long-term program monitoring coastal weather conditions and baseline hydrographic conditions.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The normal range for solar radiation at Dauphin Island Station is 0 - 1.5 kw/m2. In this group of datasets, values for the hourly Mean solar rad, Max solar rad, and Mean solar rad from julian day 133, 2000 (5/12/2000) to julian day 59, 2001(2/29/2001) are way above the normal range during day time. These values are out of range and should be marked as "suspicious." We believe it could be caused by the instrument not averaging the data input by 60 minutes, instead it stored the total solar radiation of the hour. Dauphin Island Sea Lab apply a range checking criteria to all data collected since 2003. This group of datasets with data from November, 1999 through February, 2001 are not flagged. For validation of data, please refer to the "Environmental Monitoring Data Range Checking Criteria" at http://mondata.disl.org/mondata/rangecri.cfm.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data flags were not part of the quality control measurement for data collected.
Completeness_Report:
Data were collected from 11/6/1999 (julian day 310) through 3/1/2001 (julian day 60). Data were missing from some of the days during the above period.

Process_Description:
Range checking wasn't performed against the datasets collected from 1999 through 2001. On 9/3/2014 Mike Dardeau went through the hydrographic dataset (104) and cleaned the bad data. The other three meteorological datasets (109, 112, 117), were not checked due to lack of time.
