Abstract:
In May 2006 the Powers Fisheries Ecology Lab in collaboration with National Marine Fisheries Service initiated a nearshore longline survey to investigate the abundance and distribution of coastal sharks in Alabama and Mississippi waters. Ten years of National Marine Fisheries Service bottom longline data indicate substantial differences in species abundance and distribution between the eastern and western Gulf of Mexico, divided roughly at Mobile Bay. These differences may carry important consequences for trophic transfer and food web dynamics between regions. As a result, the goals of this research are 1) to sample east and west of Mobile Bay to quantify any differences in distribution and abundance, 2) to use stable isotope and stomach content data to investigate potential dietary differences between regions. As researchers and resource managers consider multi-species management strategies, data like these are of paramount importance for adequate management of marine resources.

The DISL Coastal Shark Longline Project consists of several different sampling techniques. East to West block sampling took place every month from 200605 to 200811. North to South transect sampling within Mobile Bay and South of the bay's mouth took place from 200705 to 200811. Random port samples are also included in these data. This includes information from overlapping scientific studies and data collected at the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.

Process_Description:
Gear Specifics: One of four research vessels was outfitted with commercial-style longline gear. Monofilament mainline (426 kg or 1000 lb test 4 mm diameter, 1 nautical mile length), was deployed off the stern through a series of blocks. High fliers or buoys were deployed at the start and end of each set during daylight hours. Five kg (11 lb) weights (start, mid-set, end set), and 3.66 m (12 ft) gangions (332 kg or 700 lb test 3 mm diameter) with hooks (#15 circle) were clipped to the mainline as it was deployed. Vessel speed ranged from 3.5 – 4 knots during the set. Bottom longline effort was 100 hooks fished for one hour (soak time). Soak time was determined from the time the buoy was deployed during the set until the first buoy was retrieved to begin the haulback. Hooks were baited with Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus, 12 kg or 26 lb per set) cut to fit the circle hooks. All captures that could be safely landed were measured to the nearest mm and weighed to the nearest 0.1 kg. For captures too large to be brought on board lengths and weights were estimated. When possible the sex and state of maturity of sharks and finfish was recorded. Sharks that were not retained and in good physical condition were tagged and released. Experimental design and design change (2007): The initial coastal shark survey was initiated in May 2006. During the initial cruise, what would later turn into blocks 3 and 4 were fished (40 nautical miles). After this initial cruise, we developed a design encompassing 4 blocks, 20 nautical miles apiece. For the remaineder of 2006 (June - November), 12 stations were fished in one block each month. During a summary meeting in December 2006, it was decided to split effort between an eastern and western block each month. Beginning with the first survey in 2007, 6 stations were selected in one eastern block, and 6 stations were selected in one western block. Station selection routines remained the same; stations were selected by generating a random number list and adding that random number to the boundary of that block to get a longitude value. Another random number was then chosen and used as a distance from shore. In this way, random latitude and longitude coordinates were chosen. CTD deployment: Four CTDs were used during the course of this study, all of which are the property of NOAA Fisheries, MS Labs: SN077, SN087, a new SBE-911 on the NMFS R/V Gandy and a SBE-911 on the NMFS R/V Caretta. The two self contained units (SN-077 and SN-087) were always used on the NMFS R/V HST and the DISL R/V Wilson. Units were deployed directly following gear set out, and soaked on the surface for three minutes before the cast was made. When using self contained units, the data was uploaded to a computer after each cast. CTD processing: Data from the CTD were processed on land after completion of each cruise.
