- As part of a study to understand the abundance and distribution of coastal pelagic fish species in the northern Gulf of Mexico, gill nets and beach seines were used in a two-year survey from 2011 - 2012. Both gear types were deployed multiple times per month from April to November each year at randomly selected locations ranging from Horn Island, Mississippi to Pensacola, Florida. All gill net captured fish were enumerated, measured, and identified to species. Only Florida pompano and Spanish mackerel species were kept from seines; all other organisms were released immediately.

- Coastal waters along approximately 160 km of coastline in the northern central Gulf from Horn Island, MS to Pensacola, FL were randomly sampled. Because coastal pelagic fish tend to be migratory, a relatively large area was sampled to account for natural variation in abundances and reduce sampling bias. The shoreline (front beach and back beach if applicable) from Horn Island, MS to Pensacola, FL was gridded into 2 km wide sections using GIS. A total of 56 grids overlay the back beach habitat (16 in MS, 26 in AL, and 14 in FL) and 86 grids overlay the front beach habitat (16 in MS, 38 in Alabama, and 32 in FL). Every month, from April through November of 2011 and 2012, ten grids (4 back beach and 6 front beach) were randomly selected for sampling (90 grids sampled per year). Within each grid, three GPS coordinates were selected - the first for a gillnet set (targeting legal-sized fish) and the remaining two for beach seine pulls (targeting young-of-the-year [YOY] and juvenile fish).

- Gill nets were used to collect larger individuals of the main study species, including adults, defined by the minimum legal-size of each species (304 mm FL for Spanish mackerel and 304 mm TL for Florida pompano). Each gill net had a one hour soak time and consisted of six 100' panels with stretched mesh sizes ranging from 3.0" to 5.5". The gill net was set perpendicular to shore with the beach end anchored as close to the shoreline as possible to effectively capture these coastal pelagic species that occupy nearshore and surf zone habitats. After 1 hr, the net was retrieved and all species were identified, measured, and weighed recording the mesh size of capture. CPUE for the gill net was calculated as the number of individuals (Spanish mackerel or Florida pompano) caught divided by the soak time of the net.

- Juvenile Spanish mackerel (target length < 304 mm FL [fork length])and Florida pompano (target length < 304 mm TL [total length]) were obtained with a beach seine with bag (100' x 6' of 3/8" stretched mesh with bag dimensions of 6' x 6' x 6' with 3/8" stretched mesh) by sampling the beach surf zone. The seine was walked out into the surf zone, stretched parallel to the beach and then pulled directly into shore. Because the sampling array covered a wide range of beach slopes and habitats, the seines were standardized for depth (approximately 1 m) and the distance from the net to the shore was measured with a transect tape. This allowed a standardized measure of the abundance of YOY and juvenile fish of both species, or catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE), by calculating the number of fish collected per area seined (length of net multiplied by distance pulled in to shoreline).
