- Abstract:
- Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the Alabama Department of Conservation, Marine Resources Division, partnered to provide data on hydrographic conditions at two sites in Mississippi Sound from April 2008 to April 2010. Portersville Bay was one of the sites. The data may be downloaded from www.mymobilebay.com in a spreadsheet format.
- Purpose:
- The value of coastal observing systems is recognized by the U.S. Congress, the National Ocean Partnership Program, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration. Recent reports by the Pew Oceans Commission and U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy have decried the lack of information from near coastal waters on which to base management decisions and recommended monitoring programs linked to strong research. Reasons for continuous observations of meteorological and hydrographic parameters include (1) continuous characterization of spatial and temporal patterns of change in water quality, (2) development of a permanent record of significant and human caused changes in environmental indicators over time, and (3) support for research activities through the availability of consistent, scientifically valid data.

- After 2010, the other station, Cedar Point, continued operation until 2011, when it became a real-time meteorological and hydrographic observing station - one of eight in the MyMobileBay network. The Portersville Bay station was discontinued.

- Process_Description:
- Data were measured using multi parameter YSI 6600EDS V2-4 units. Probes were mounted approximately 0.5 meters off the bottom. Dissolved oxygen data are burst averages over 24 seconds at 2 hertz; the remaining hydrographic observations are burst averages over 4 seconds at 2 hertz. Salinity was derived from conductivity and expressed in Practical Salinity Units. Percent saturation of dissolved oxygen was derived from measured dissolved oxygen, temperature and salinity. Stations were monitored and data downloaded at approximately two-week to one-month intervals. Data were collected every 30 minutes beginning on 20080403 and ending 20100414.
