- The Fisheries Oceanography in Coastal Alabama (FOCAL) program began in 2006 as a way for scientists at Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) to study the natural variability of Alabama's nearshore environment as it relates to fisheries production. FOCAL provided a long-term baseline data set that included time-series hydrographic data from a permanent offshore mooring (ADCP, vertical thermister array and CTDs at surface and bottom) and shipboard surveys (vertical CTD profiles and water sampling), as well as monthly ichthyoplankton and zooplankton (depth-discrete) sample collections at FOCAL sites.
The subset of data presented here are from the mooring, and includes a vertical array of thermisters, CTDs at surface and bottom, an ADCP at the bottom, and vertical CTD profiles collected at the mooring during maintenance surveys. The mooring is located at 30 05.410'N 88 12.694'W, 25 km southwest of the entrance to Mobile Bay. Temperature, salinity, density, depth, and current velocity data were collected at 20-minute intervals from 2006 to 2012. Other parameters, such as dissolved oxygen, are available for portions of the time series depending on which instruments were deployed at the time.

- The vertical array consists of a surface CTD (located 4.33 m below surface), 5-10 thermisters (temperature only) spaced at mostly regular intervals through the 20 m water column, a bottom CTD, and an ADCP. A YSI for collecting oxygen data was present for portions of the time series.
Maintenance surveys were conducted at approximately 1-3 month intervals to retrieve and replace the deployed instruments. Small data gaps of a few hours duration occurred during maintenance surveys. Longer data gaps occurred for individual instruments due to battery failure or other equipment malfunction, and occasionally for part or all of the array during major storm events.

- ADCP data were collected with an RDI Workhorse Sentinel ADCP (http://www.rdinstruments.com/sen.aspx). Data are in 20 minute increments, with each value representing an average of continuous measurements over 5 minutes at a sampling frequency of 1 Hz.
Raw data were accessed through WinADCP software and either converted to text for custom processing using FORTRAN, or exported to MATLAB, to create several types of diagnostic figures.

- Raw data from CTDs, thermisters, and YSI were converted to space-delimited text using SeaBird SeaTerm or SBE Data Processing software for the CTDs and thermisters, and EcoWatch for the YSI. Data were then processed using either FORTRAN or Matlab to create simple diagnostic figures and to align the measurement times among all instruments.
Data from the YSI were collected at 20 minute increments, with each value representing an average of continuous measurements over 5 minutes. For most of the time series, CTD and thermister data were collected at 1-minute intervals; these were averaged into 20-minute bins to match the time interval of the YSI and ADCP.

- Data tables containing hydrographic and current data from 20060928 to 20120524, at a permanent mooring 25 km southwest of the entrance to Mobile Bay, AL. Data are averaged at 20-minute intervals. Files are space-delimited ASCII text.
- Entity_and_Attribute_Detail_Citation:
- The full time-series of hydrographic and current data is from October 2004 to the present, though the portion funded by the FOCAL program is from 2006 to 2012. Files containing the data are in 1-3 month subsets, with beginning and ending times based on when mooring maintenance occurred. A separate space-delimited text file exists for each deployed instrument, and a typical subset includes one file for the ADCP, one file for the surface CTD, one file for the bottom CTD, one file for each thermister (between 5 and 10), one file for a YSI if there was one, and one file containing temperature data from all instruments. Additionally, there is a file for a CTD vertical profile done at the time of maintenance.
